Origami sculpture installation

This 3rd year project was an Origami sculpture group project for an installation for an exhibition at the School of Tourism and Hospitality. This was in partnership with the Department of Industrial Design at the University of Johannesburg.

Our group was assigned the theme of culture - and we decided to create a Ndebele hut - with an origami twist!
Our design process began as a class with creating any origami that we felt inspired to make, without knowing the brief. The origami sculptures would be exhibited with video projection mapping, which we began to explore and play with.
We took inspiration from origami lighting products and refined our design through        mockups and CAD modelling - with specific dimensions to ensure that our sculpture was                                                     the perfect dimensions for the venue
We then got to work with our giant pieces of cardboard, gluing them together to create even larger pieces and cutting out the different elemental parts to create our Origami hut
We created a guide for us to ensure that our pieces were accurate and to test our our model before final assembly at the exhibition.
With a lot of teamwork, mutual support and passion - we assembled all our pieces                                                                               together!
Here is our first test with two panels, and playing around and having fun of course!
We finally added the finishing touches, such as internal reinforcement and finishing the                                 edges with register paper rolls, to create a sleek result.
We transported all our panels to the exhibition venue and then assembled them together,                               step by step - with a lot of love, tape and hot glue
Our final sculpture installation - an origami Nedebele hut.
What an exciting and rewarding project where I learnt so much about teamwork, planning                                                             and collaboration.
                                                        Thanks for watching!
